“Haaaaay”!!!
Welcome to the installation of officers for the 2024 -2025 team.

I’ve always wanted to say this so “Live from Wenatchee it is Saturday Night”!

I would like to start off by thanking the craft for the honor to serve you as your Grand Master for 2024-2025. It is truly my honor to serve you. To the installation Team for the continued support and excellent installation. You really are amazing.

To the tech committee for all their work and for continuing to make us look good.

To our concordant bodies. Your contribution to making the world a better place is amazing and I look forward to continuing to support your efforts. We hear that our youth is our future. For me they are our inspiration to do better, attend more and to be a constant advocate to support their efforts. This is not about our money. It’s about getting our butts in a chair, leaning in and as MW Steve said “Be all in” as each and every one their members deserves our earnest support.

Special thanks to my family, without them and their support I would not be able to serve you.

To my dad (who is watching me from above with my grandfather (who’s apron I was wearing for installation that will be placed in the apron memorial later this year with military honors) and I know they are smiling and guiding me with every step I take.

To my mom, you did everything for Kathy and I and we truly are the people we are today because of both you and dad.

To my sister, having a big sister wasn’t always easy (aka cats and dogs in the same kennel) but as we grew up, I found my best friend and confidant. Someone that we can talk about anything and in the end come out stronger knowing no matter what life has in store for us we will always have each other to get through it together. To my Brother-in-law. Your love for my sister makes her shine, remember to keep that going as “I know people”.

To my wife Kim, when I say you are my everything that doesn’t do it justice, I knew from the moment I looked into your eyes (when you were passing me on the way to the dug out at a co-ed softball game and detailed how you would put the bat I was using to hit home runs where the sun doesn’t shine if I hit another one over your head in left field) I was Hooked, you have enhanced my life in so many ways I cannot begin to express how blessed I am to have you by my side, be my everything every day.

To our Daughter, you are the most amazing gift we could ever ask for, you have enhanced every day since the Doctor placed you in my arms and continue to amaze and inspire mom and I every day, to Josh refer to what I said to George “ I know people” We see how much you cherish Elle and we are grateful  to have you as part of our family.

To the craft. Hold on for the ride, each and every one of you continue to impress me with your commitment to the craft and exemplifying being “all in” and you continue to select our leadership that accent’s what was done prior as we continue to move our craft forward.

We have a busy year and one that is filled with exciting events. Please continue to check my Calendar for updates and attend as many as possible.

My charity for this year is Washington Masonic Services, Youth Scholarship that will be combined with MW Steve’s to allow for a larger impact to our youth and the community.

Mark your Calendar for September 28th for the “Grand Masters Gala”.

My theme for the year is “Empower, Enlighten and Uplift” this is something that’s stuck with me since I first heard it in 1998 when I started my journey in Masonry, if everything we do in the craft and in the outer world empowers, enlightens or uplifts someone we have had contact with we will continue to let our light shine and make a difference in the world around us.

Thank you,

MW James C. Norton, Jr.

Brethren,

I think I have finally recovered from the Annual Communication.  It was great to see so many Brothers in attendance.  This year’s Annual Communication was a resounding success.  We were able to get through a tremendous amount of business efficiently and have fun and fellowship in the process. I want to once again thank the Credentials Committee, the Technology Committee and the Brethren who help with the load in, setup and load out.  Your dedication and hard work are crucial to the success of the Annual Communication.  We could not do it without you.  Thank you so very much!

I also want to thank the Brethren for electing me again as your Grand Secretary.  I am both honored and humbled to be elected to another term.  I will continue to work as hard as I can to improve our Craft and to serve the Brethren and Lodges of this Grand Jurisdiction.

There are several important developments that have happened since we met in Wenatchee almost a month ago.  First, Grandview has been purchased by the Grand Lodges of California, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and North Carolina.  I have been asked my opinion about this announcement.  I believe that this is an important step for Grandview.  This puts Masons in control of this system going forward.  I anticipate that there will be developments to the platform that will assist not only the Lodges but will help facilitate interjurisdictional communication and improve our internal and external processes. This will not happen overnight, but I expect to see great improvements to the platform in the months and the years to come.

With that in mind, I am excited to announce that we are working with Grandview to allow the Lodges to receive online dues payments through Grandview.  This has been a long time coming, but we feel that the online dues payment system through Grandview is very functional, safe and secure and is ready to be offered to those Lodges wishing to participate.  We will be getting back to you with more details in the next few weeks and hope to have online dues payments up and running by the middle of August.

Finally, I am excited to announce that I have hired VW Bro. Matt Appel to work in the Grand Lodge office a couple of days a week.  Matt will be helping with special projects (such as managing the online dues payments) and other special projects that we are working to implement to offer better service to the Lodges.  Currently, Matt will be in the office on Tuesday and Wednesday.  His email address is matt@freemason-wa.org.  Please help us welcome VW Bro. Matt to the team.

Again, I want to thank all of the Brothers for your hard work and devotion to the Craft. The world needs Masonry now more than ever. While many of our Lodges may be dark in the summer, the light of Masonry should never go dark. Take the time to assist those in need within our communities. Let the light of Masonry shine throughout our communities, our Jurisdiction and our world.

I hope to see you all this year during our travels. Have a safe and happy summer and please do not hesitate to call or email me if you need assistance.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

Clinton M. Brown, Jr.
Grand Secretary

I hope you’re enjoying our summer! The weather has been ridiculously hot for a few days now, so fortunately it’s cooling down some. Now that many of our Lodges are either going dark for the summer or going informal, we can really kick back and enjoy this time of the year.

The Annual Communication went even better than last year, from what I’ve heard from the Brethren. A lot of business was conducted in a very efficient manner, and there was plenty of fanfare. We are building on lessons learned from previous annual Communications, and the improvements are noticeable by all who attended. Also important was the opportunity to meet you in person, as it’s one of the few events that we meet from all over the Jurisdiction in one place. It’s a great opportunity to catch up on things that we’ve discussed over the year.

I would also like to thank those of you who assisted us and the Arrangements Committee in the moving of the Grand Lodge furniture and other materials to and from the Grand Lodge office to the Wenatchee Convention Center, and the set up and take down. There is a lot involved with these moves, and your assistance made things much easier. And, of course, I would like to thank VWB Pat Baker, WB Pat Hall and WB Scott Ross of the Arrangements Committee for your work in this project. It was fun working with you. The same goes for the Credentials and Tech committees, where the improved communication between us really assisted in moving the business of the Annual Communication along in a concise and efficient manner. Thank you as well!

As you might guess, we’re still working up here to process all that we have done at the Annual Communication, and while many of our Lodges are dark over the next couple of months, there are still several who are active, doing degree work (including outdoor degree work!), Table Lodges, and participating in local parades and festivals. A new take on Lodges going dark that I’ve noticed this summer is Brothers from other Jurisdictions, in the United States and from overseas, who are on vacation and wish to visit a Lodge in the area while they’re on vacation, only to find that most of the lodges in the area they’re visiting are dark. It can be tricky for us to be able to tell a visitor what events are going on in their area, as there are dozens of events, picnics, barbecues, etc. that happen throughout the Jurisdiction during the summer. We will do our best to contact Lodges to find out if they have an event while a visitor from another Jurisdiction is near their Lodge.

You’ll see further down in the Messenger a list of many upcoming summer events. I’ll be attending some of them, and I look forward to seeing you this summer!

And yes, I’m still working on that drum of Jelly-Bellies. A special thank-you to whoever bought them.

Fraternal Regards,

Clayton LaVigne

From the Desk of the WAMS Business Development Director:
MWB Edward C. Woods

Dear Masonic Family,

In the Masonic world, it is often said that this is a volunteer organization. In large part that would be correct as we are not compensated for the work we do. Still, the business side of the fraternity needs to be treated like a business. As such, we have a duty and responsibility to the Masons of Washington to ensure that we provide the highest level of care to our elderly, support the youth who hold our future, and provide excellent stewardship of our Masonic heritage.

In addition to the Grand Lodge Executive Committee, our Board of Trustees includes three members who are elected by our members at the Annual Communication, and three members who are appointed by the Washington Masonic Services (WAMS) Board at our annual meeting in July. Having served as a member of this important Board during my time on the Grand Lodge Executive Committee, and now understanding its critical value from this vantage point as a staff member, my suggestion for anyone who is considering making themselves available to the WAMS Board is to ask yourself a crucial question: “What do I bring to the table by making myself available?” Is it experience, a specific skillset that will serve the organization (examples include but are not limited to expertise in technology, finance, investment, law, business management)? How can you actively participate beyond merely being present? Naturally at times the mindset of “volunteer organization” allows people to justify whether they miss a meeting here or there. When this occurs on a more frequent basis, though, the work becomes fragmented. We all play an integral role in WAMS’ governance. Success is driven by everyone’s contributions.

Also, if you are considering making yourself available, it is important to review the expectations of a Board Trustee. Consider your work life balance to ensure that you can commit the time necessary to fulfill your obligations when you accept the position. Each Trustee is expected to:
  • Seek to understand WAMS’ guiding principles, programs, needs, and partnership opportunities.
  • Prepare for, attend, and fully participate in board and committee meetings.
  • Seek to understand WAMS’ financial statements and other board and committee materials in advance of meetings.
  • Serve as active ambassadors for WAMS’ programs and opportunities.
  • Leverage connections, networks, and resources to extend WAMS’ reach and impact.
  • Give a meaningful personal financial donation each fiscal year.
  • Follow the organization’s bylaws, policies, and resolutions.
  • Sign an annual conflict-of-interest disclosure and update it in a timely manner, disclosing potential conflicts before meetings, and actual conflicts should they arise during meetings.
  • Participate in required background check screenings.
  • Maintain confidentiality about all internal matters of the organization.
  • Uphold the legal duties and laws regarding nonprofit governance.
  • Respect the dignity of all who bring their voices into WAMS’ meetings and activities.

If you have any questions about what service on the WAMS Board is like, please reach out to a current Board member. They will be happy to share their experience with you.

Fraternally,

Edward C. Woods, PGM
Business Development Director

Special note from the Grand Master:

Worshipful Masters & Secretaries All,

VWB Steve Dinkins and VWB Matt Appel have done an outstanding job of passing along all the needed information about my upcoming fundraising dinner.  I am asking all of you, please share this information with your lodge secretaries and ask them to send it out to all members of your lodge. I know many lodges are dark, but that should not prevent us from getting the word out for this amazing event. I would really love to fill the room at this year’s dinner. Please help me help my charity, Washington Masonic Services Youth Scholarships, and join us for what promises to be another great evening of Fellowship, Brotherhood, and fun!
